WHERE DOES THE IRISH LOOK COME FROM?
Over the past ten thousand years, many different peoples have arrived on the island of Ireland. The genetic history and makeup of the Irish have connections to the region of Galicia in northern Spain, the Basque region, as well as Wales and Scotland. Despite the mixing and migration of peoples in other parts of Europe, the genetic history of the Irish has remained relatively untouched and unaffected, with the western Atlantic region still holding an early share of their genetic history.
However, we have limited knowledge about the physical characteristics of the initial prehistoric individuals who came to Ireland.
How do you envision the appearance of these ancient Irish individuals?
THE CELTS
Many ‘redheads’ were noted and the Celtic people were described by the Ancient Romans as ‘tall and fair and warlike’. We have knowledge that the Celts arrived in Ireland approximately 500 BC.
Does Irish red hair originate from this location?
The idea that some Celts were red-haired was greatly strengthened by the fact that their hair was bleached and styled to a lime color, giving it a reddish appearance. However, it is a fact that many Celts had dark hair.
What was the height of the Cel
The Romans, standing at a height of 5’5″ (1.65m), were approximately the average stature of a Roman soldier. On the other hand, the Ancient Celts, measuring between 5’6″ and 5’7″ (1.7-1.75m), possessed a greater height compared to the Romans. Historians theorize that the Celts, by applying various substances to their hair prior to engaging in battle, caused their hair to elevate from their heads, creating an illusion of increased height.
More than two millennia ago, an Irish Celt named ‘Clonycavan man’, sporting styled red hair, remains visible in the ‘bog bodies’ showcase at the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.
Vikings – The Scandinavian Look
Stature tall and skin fair, eyes blue pale, hair blonde or light-coloured having – described typically are characteristics physical Scandinavian or Nordic.
Can you observe any resemblance to the Vikings in the appearance of the Irish people?
A popular theory suggests that the Irish look, with lots of blue-eyed, blonde-haired individuals mixed in, began to emerge over time as a result of Viking sea-invaders attacking Ireland from Scandinavia before the 9th century. Prior to the Viking influence, the Irish people were predominantly dark-eyed and dark-haired.
The Vikings brought a lot of traits to the Irish genetic mix, which included light-coloured eyes, light-coloured skin, and fair hair. However, it is not definitely the case that the mixing of the dark Celtic hair with the blonde Viking hair produced red hair. This theory is both untrue and true.
The Spanish Influence
In many locations, it is uncommon to find individuals with fair complexion and dark hair. However, in Ireland, similar to the Irish actor Colin Farrell, this combination is frequently observed. Irish individuals with this appearance often possess dense and full eyebrows as well.

One theory suggests that these individuals, who descended from the survivors of the Spanish Armada (1588) that landed on the west coast of Ireland, were once known as the ‘Black Irish’.
Can you observe any ‘Spanish appearance’ in the Irish population?
There is little evidence to support the theory that the Irish people, who settled on the west coast of Ireland over a much longer period, may have existed along the Atlantic coast from the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa as an ancient sea trading route. However, it is unlikely that any significant number of Spanish soldiers would have long survived in the war-torn place that Ireland was in the sixteenth century.
The Modern Irish Look
The modern Irish usually have light features – pale blue or green eyes, reddish or brown hair and fair skin with freckles.
Freckles
Do you possess any freckles? Do you find them appealing?
Freckles are a common feature among people of Irish descent, which are often most visible on individuals with a fair complexion due to the concentration of melanin in specific groups.
People with lower concentrations of melanin generally have freckles because exposure to sunlight increases their susceptibility to harmful effects of sun radiation, thus triggering their formation.
A farmer’s tan
A ‘farmer’s tan’ is a widely observed occurrence in Ireland. Are you familiar with its meaning?
People of Irish descent often have a difficult time getting a tan and tend to get easily sunburned due to their pale skin color.
A ‘farmer’s tan’ refers to a tan that is limited to the arms and neck of an individual due to wearing a t-shirt during sun exposure, while the rest of the body remains pale. Farmers acquire this tan due to engaging in strenuous outdoor work while donning shirts.
